Vijender Singh Clinches WBO Asia Pacific Title

India’s star boxer Vijender Singh added another feather to his cap of achievements by clinching the WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight title. The 30-year-old player defeated the former WBC European champion Kerry Hope at Delhi’s Thyagraj Stadium and recorded his seventh straight win in the circuit.

Vijender, who has won India’s first Olympic medal for boxing, took all 10 rounds to dismantle the Welsh-born Australian Hope. He scored 98-92, 98-92, 100-90 to be the unanimous winner. He is now ranked 15th in the WBO rankings.

“This comes after a lot of hard work put in by me, my trainer, my team,” an emotional Vijender said after the win I thank my coach, my promoter and my team who have done a fantastic job.” He further added, “It’s not about myself, it’s about my nation, my country.”

An ecstatic Lee Beard who coached Vijender Singh showed his appreciation for the world champion, “When I first saw him, it took just 15 minutes for me to gauge that he will win a world title. I looked into his eyes and I saw a fire. Whatever he seems to focus on, he gets it. Of all the fighters I have trained, he is one of the best when it comes to learning; he is an extremely quick learner.”

It was Vijender’s first bout in his homeland after he turned professional last year. Delhi’s Thyagraj stadium was jam-packed with his fans cheering for him. Many celebrities like Randeep Hooda, Mary Kom, Virender Sehawag, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, and Rahul Gandhi were also present in the stadium to witness the epic win. As soon as the results were announced, Twitter flooded with congratulatory messages for the champion. Prime Minister and the President also congratulated Vijender for his classic win.

Uber Arrives in Uganda

The global online taxi firm, Uber has made its debut in Uganda by starting its services in the city of Kampala. After its immense success in other African cities, the online platform was launched in Uganda in the first week of June.

Now, if one is heading to the airport, doing some shopping at Acacia Mall, watching a game at Mandela National Stadium or going out for some late night partying, the affordable ride is just one click away. Celebrating its launch in the capital city of Uganda, Uber provided free rides to the city people for four days.

The city’s rapidly growing infrastructure inspired the company to start its services in the heart of Kampala. “Kampala is a growing city in the heart of Uganda, a country with a fast-growing economy.” Uber said in its official announcement which further read “With its people, energy, innovation, entrepreneurial and rapidly growing economy, Kampala is an exciting place for Uber to bring its services.”

During the official launch in Kampala, Alon Lits, general manager Uber Sub Saharan African stated, “By offering a friendly and reliable complement to existing transport options, we can help improve urban mobility in Kampala.” He further added, “We are mindful of the city’s current traffic congestion, and we aim to be part of the solution in improving it, while creating new, fruitful opportunities for drivers.”

Davis Cup: India Enters World Group Play-Offs

With a perfect finish in the Asia/Oceania Group I tie, the Indian Davis Cup team made its way to the World Group play-offs of the Davis Cup. The host nation’s team defeated its Korean rivals with a 4-1 lead.

Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna had already sealed the deal by taking a lead of 3-0, winning the only doubles-match against Seong Chan Hong and Hong Chung by 6-3 6-4 6-4. Saketh Myneni and Ramkumar Ramanathan had already won their respective singles.

The final day matches were played in Chandigarh where the humid climate proved to be a hassle for both the teams. While Yong-Kyu Lim prevented a Korean whitewash with a gritty 3-6 6-4 6-7(2) win over Ramkumar Ramanathan, Rohan Bopanna aced the match defeating Chung by 3-6 6-4 6-4. Despite losing the tie, the Koreans have to be credited for giving a tough fight to the Indians. Even though they were playing on a foreign land, they gave their best shot in every game.

After the final win, the Indian team celebrated by dancing on popular Bollywood number, much to the delight of their fans. This is the third time that Indian team has reached this stage in the game, they have lost play-offs twice – against Serbia (in 2014, Bangalore) and Czech Republic (in 2015, New Delhi). The team is all set to secure its position in the elite 16-nation World Group.

Cycle to Stay Away from Type 2 Diabetes

Cycling is an activity that most of us used to enjoy in our childhood. However, as we grew up recreational activities like this paused, for we became more inclined towards the changing lifestyle of the new technological era. This decrease in the outdoor activities has led to various health issues.

Various researches conducted by scientists have shown that many of these activities have the ability to cut down the risk of the new age diseases. Cycling is one of them.

Recently, a research suggested that Cycling has the potential to reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The Research stated that non-cyclists have 20 percent higher risk for T2D than the people who involve themselves in regular cycling. In addition, this activity also helps in lowering the risk of various chronic diseases in the people of all age groups.

Martin Rasmussen from the University of Southern Denmark admitted this and stated that “We find it especially interesting that those who started cycling had a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes, given that the study population were men and women of middle and old age”.

Around 24,623 men and 27,890 women from Denmark, between the ages of 50 and 65 were observed in the study whose cycling habits were compared to get the stated results. Hence, it becomes important to motivate people to engage in the outdoor recreational activities that will help them in preventing the development of T2D.

Nokia and Vodacom Launch 4G in Tanzania

Strengthening their Tanzanian partnership, Nokia and Vodacom introduced 4G in Dar es Salaam in May 2016. With this service, Vodacom has become the largest wireless telecommunications network of the country. The services were started in Dar es Salaam on 11 May 2016 and are expected to reach all major cities of Tanzania in the upcoming times.

While Vodacom is looking forward to 200Mbps download speeds as an “eventual goal”, for the present time, it is believed that the network is capable of delivering downlink transmission speeds of up to 70Mbps.

Prior to this launch, the company began testing 4G LTE in 2013 with Nokia Networks. It is expected that the coverage will gradually extend to other major parts of the country as well. Earlier, Nokia also supplied 2G and 3G equipment for Vodacom. Presently, Nokia marks its presence in almost all countries in Africa and is striving hard to expand its reach across other global destinations. It also manages Vodacom’s network in Tanzania.

The Country Senior Officer of Nokia, Pete Beadle said “Nokia is spending 4.5 Billion ‎Euro per annum. That is equivalent to the GDP of Dar Es Salaam. It is a serious investment done to make sure we will continue leading innovation to expand the human possibilities of the connected world.” He also remarked that this launch is an exemplification of the effort Nokia is setting into research and development. The company asserts that it has a vision to lead Tanzania into the digital world and hence make sure that they provide state-of-the-art services across the nation.

Managing Director of Vodacom Tanzania Limited, Mr. Ian Ferrao also remarked that their company wants to contribute towards the nation’s growth and development and said that “Our vision is to lead Tanzania into the digital age and in order to achieve this we are committed to ensure that we deliver the best 4G services available in the Country.”

Portugal Lifts its First Euro Cup

The one month long football festival, Euro Cup as always was a vivacious, dynamic and throbbing experience for the football fans all across the globe. Hosted by France from 10 June to 10 July, the fifteenth Euro Cup was an exciting event. It was for the first time that 24 teams participated in the event (only 16 teams used to participate earlier).

The final of the game showed that it is not necessary that the team with finest style of the play will win the tournament but the one which can survive against the odds. Portugal was not the best team contesting in the tournament and did not have a very strong team to support its bid for the cup. The team rode its luck all along the way with Ronaldo leading the team single handedly to the finale.

Ronaldo’s injury during the match came out as a soul-crushing shock for his fans. But Ronaldo’s exit from the field fared well for the team as the French team was proving quite menacing for them before that. And the change in field position got them into a stronger position to fight.

Cristiano Ronaldo was super excited about lifting the cup for the first time. He expressed his happiness by saying, “I am very happy. I have been looking for this for a long time, since 2004. I asked God for another chance at this because we deserved it,”

The Player of the Tournament award was given to the French player Antoine Griezmann and the Young Player of the Tournament award was conferred to Portugal Renato Sanches.

For his 6 goals and 2 assists, Antoine Griezmann was awarded with the Golden Boot too. The Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was given the Silver Boot for his 3 goals and 3 assits while the Bronze Boot was given to French player Olivier Giroud for 3 goals and 2 assists. Hungarian player Zoltán Gera’s goal against Portugal was named as the goal of the tournament based on online voting.

Eastern Africa is All Set to Reach the Sky

Expanding the aerial reach of the continent, East African countries are all making headway in the airlines industry. While Uganda is all set to reintroduce its national airline, carriers in Tanzania and Rwanda are also amplifying their presence. Kenya is also expected to raise its capital in Kenya Airways, where the government has 29 per cent shares. The Airlines is also reestablishing itself for a better outcome.

Yoweri Museveni, Uganda’s President said in a cabinet meeting that he wishes to revive the airline that went bankrupt earlier in the year 2001. He said that at the present time, Uganda has a stronger economic situation and is looking forward to start its own Airline for “Ugandan travelers are suffering because of, apparently, not having a national airline.”

In Tanzania, to acquire more aircrafts in the state-controlled airline Air Tanzania, the government has also allocated various funds in its last month’s budget as well.

In this rapid race of strengthening the fleet of the country, Rwanda too is going to start its first two Airbus A330 long race jets in the upcoming months. The country also has eight aircrafts that serve the people. In addition, the country also wants to become a regional trade hub and to achieve that it is planning to begin air travel to Asian and European countries from next year.

Keeping in mind the need to strengthen their economic position on the globe, these East African countries are on their move to develop airports and airlines for a better and faster transportation system.

GST Bill Sees a New Surge With the Monsoon Session in the Parliament

With the beginning of the Monsoon session, a new positive wave has surged in the India parliament. There is a strong possibility that the withstanding Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill will get clearance from the house.

A day before the beginning of the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that “GST is of national importance. Issue is not which government gets credit. Important Bills, including GST will be taken up in the monsoon session and I hope for meaningful discussions and outcomes.” Later on the first day of the session, he suggested that everyone should work together for this Bill as it will prove to be a breakthrough for the greater good of the country. The Congress has also agreed to a five-hour debate on the proposal giving way for the Bill.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar affirmed this and said “I should say there is a positive atmosphere. Everybody seems to say that we should take it (GST) to a logical conclusion in this session”. He also made it clear that the current government is making forward steps and “will run extra mile and shall reach out to the opposition parties.”

The proposal has already been passed in Lok Sabha but has not received an approval in the Rajya Sabha. However, now many parties are coming forward in the support of the bill indicating the positive chances that it will get an approval in the upcoming times. BJP has made it clear that GST proposal is on priority in this session and they will strive hard to get a clearance on it.

It is said that this Bill will remove the implications of the tariffs imposed by the Centre and different states. The Bill has been presented as the most important tax reform in the past years and will certainly contribute towards the national interest.

Dubai Retains The Position As Second-Largest Retail Hub

In a yet another outstanding achievement, Dubai is crowned as the second-largest in the list of worlds’ most important retail hubs. This is the fifth time that city has achieved this honor.

Dubai has 57 percent of international retailers, while the topper in the list London has 57.9 percent of international retailers. Dubai may soon acquire the top position if it continues with this global expansion.

Presently, The Emirate has around 62.6 percent of brands from Europe and 60.6 percent of brands from United States. In the year 2013, it witnessed 19 new retail entrants and in the present time due to the development and expansion of various malls, the Emirate has become a centre of attraction for many new retailers and international brands.

Hamad Buamim, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry President and Chief Executive Officer affirmed that Dubai offers “advanced infrastructure” for retail businesses. He said “The UAE economy has been witnessing steady growth over the last few years. Dubai has clearly benefitted from the economic competitiveness and the emirate’s retail sector continues to be driven on the back of strong growth exhibited by tourism, aviation and capital inflow.”. He also added that “Retail constitutes nearly a third of Dubai’s gross domestic product and we expect the industry to continue showing strong growth in the coming years,”

Anil Kumble to Coach the Blue-Army

The Indian Cricket Board has entrusted former skipper and ace spinner Anil Kumble with the responsibility to lead team India as head coach. Former Indian captain Anil Kumble will hold the post for one year. It is after 16 years that an Indian player is appointed as the head-coach of the team after Kapil Dev resigned in September 2000.

Kumble’s first assignment as the Head-coach of the blue-army will be to lead them for four-Test tour of the West Indies. “I have an opportunity to make a difference. I have an opportunity to be part of the journey and if I can be part of the journey where we see Indian cricket rise to where we all want it to be, then I think it’s wonderful. I feel privileged, like I already mentioned. It is an honor, again to be a part of the team.” Kumble said expressing his delight.

Announcing his appointment, the BCCI showed its immense belief in the caliber of the star cricketer and said, “As for the one-year period, Kumble is now transforming himself from being a great on the cricketing field to probably becoming a great coach that we expect him to be.”

Anil Kumble is one legendary cricketer. In a fabulous international career of 18 years, Kumble picked up 956 international scalps. He played 132 Tests taking 619 wickets at an average of 29.65 and was made the captain of test team in 2007. He is known for his best figures of 10 for 74 against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999. He is the highest Indian wicket taker in both Test matches and One-Day Internationals and is third in the international list behind Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne.

Even after his retirement from the field in 2008, Kumble’s connection with the cricket continued as he took up administrative roles. He was selected as president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association in November 2010. He also served as the chairman of National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and also got the privilege to head the BCCI’s technical committee.
