US Iraq Begins Talks On Withdrawing US Troops

The United States and Iraq held their first round of talks on the future of the US military presence in Iraq. Meanwhile, Baghdad discussed its expectations for creating a timeframe for the withdrawal of US troops.

On Saturday, high-ranking officials of the US-led coalition and the Iraqi military forces met with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudas in Baghdad.

PM Al-Sudani said in a joint statement, “the commencement of the first round of bilateral dialogue between Iraq and the United States of America to end the coalition in Iraq.” He further added that military experts will be in charge of concluding the Global Coalition’s fight against Daesh (ISIL).

Currently, there are 2,500 US troops deployed in Iraq. The coalition was formed in 2014 to help Iraq’s government defeat ISIL.

The US government responded by saying that it aims to set up a committee to negotiate the terms for concluding the mission, which was first discussed last year. The US highlighted that the decision to talk about pulling out of Iraq was made before October 7. However, Iraq and ISIL claimed credit for the move, claiming it “proves that the Americans only understand the language of force” and vowed to keep attacking.

Soon India To Have Its First Lab-Grown Fish

The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has started a research study to develop lab-grown fish meat. In this groundbreaking initiative, India will soon have its first lab-grown fish meat, meticulously designed to emulate the original flavour, texture, and nutritional value of natural fish.

The Kochi-based CMFRI has partnered with a start-up, Neat Meatt Biotech, which is working on cultivated meat. CMFRI will be responsible for conducting research on the early cell line development of valuable marine fish species, including the isolation and culture of fish cells. It will also manage the project’s analytical, biochemical, and genetic tasks.

The anticipated lab-grown fish meat will be crafted by isolating specific cells from fish specimens and nurturing them within laboratory confines, utilising animal component-free media. Meanwhile, Neat Meatt will assume the responsibility for crafting scaffolds or microcarriers, refining optimal cell growth conditions, and amplifying production through bioreactors.

India’s determination to meet rising seafood demand while reducing pressure on wild resources led to the creation of this innovative initiative. Additionally, it aims to position India alongside trailblazing countries like Singapore, Israel, and the US in the realm of cultured seafood research.

Macron To Attend India’s National Day To Foster Deeper Diplomatic Relations

French President Emmanuel Macron will attend India’s Republic Day as a chief guest on Friday. This visit is seen as a significant milestone in strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries ahead of a multi-billion-dollar deal to buy French fighter jets and submarines for the Indian military.

On January 25, he will first visit Jaipur to see the Amber Fort and later meet PM Modi to take a tour of the pink city together.

However, the deal was not finalised then. France further looks forward to enhancing cooperation in the space and nuclear sectors.

Karpoori Thakur To Be Awarded With India’s Highest Civil Award, Bharat Ratna

A prominent socialist leader and former Bihar chief minister, Karpoori Thakur, will be awarded the highest civilian award in the country, ‘Bharat Ratna.’ Along with him, 49 other people have been granted the Bharat Ratna award, including 17 posthumously.

Thakur was dubbed the Jan Nayak despite serving for a short while. He served as the Bihar CM from December 1970 to June 1971 and from December 1977 to April 1979. The award was presented 35 years after he passed away on February 17, 1988.

Bihar’s chief minister, Nitish Kumar, and his party, JDU, have long demanded the award from the Centre for the state’s first non-Congress Chief Minister. Kumar stated, “This highest honour to the late Karpoori Thakur ji on his 100th birth anniversary will create positive sentiments among the Dalit, deprived, and neglected sections.”

Upon the award being given posthumously, it is seen as a BJP masterstroke ahead of the general election as Thakur belonged to OBC and BJP aims to gain allegiance of this group as they are still loyal to Nitish Kumar. Bihar has forty parliamentary seats and it is yet to be seen how this move will impact the upcoming elections.

Thailand Aims For Lithium Output In Two Years

The silvery-white element is set to put Thailand on the global stage as one of the key sources of lithium mines, as it has discovered nearly 15 million tonnes of lithium deposits. The latest discovery has positioned Thailand as the third-largest lithium resource in the world. However, it is unclear about the amount to be commercially exploited.

Meanwhile, Thailand aims to start producing lithium mines in its southwest in about two years. Government deputy spokeswoman Rudklao Intawong Suwankiri said, “We are trying to find out how much we can use from the resources we found. It will take time.”

According to government officials and companies involved in lithium production, it will boost Thailand’s ambition to become a regional electric vehicle production hub. Along with lithium mines, it will develop an EV production industry, which will include $1.44 billion in investment commitments from Chinese carmakers.

The 14.8 million tonnes of lithium are distributed between two separate sites in the southern province of Phang Nga. Miner Pan Asia Metals is gearing up to file mining permits in March. It will be filed for the Phang-Nga, which includes the prospective Reung Kiet and Bang I Tum sites.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) recorded more than 28 centimetres (11 inches) of snowfall in Gangneung province. 5,620 officials and 693 pieces of snow removal equipment were deployed to control the situation and continue the event.

The agency has issued a heavy snow advisory for mountainous regions of the province. Government officials have declared an emergency and implemented protocols to protect the players and residents in the province.

Choi Min-Jeong, a two-time Olympic champion in short-track speed skating, suffered the cancellation of her one-point lesson session in Gangneung, an area located 30 kilometres east of Pyeongchang. The clinic scheduled for Lee June-seo, the silver medalist in the men’s relay in 2022, was also cancelled. In addition, every outdoor activity, performance, and skate session in Gangneung was cancelled.

The fourth edition of the Winter Youth Olympics began on Friday, January 19, and will conclude on February 1. A quadrennial youth winter sports event is held in Gangwon Province for the first time in Asian history.

Tata Group Acquires IPL Title Sponsorship For INR 2,500 Crore For The Next Five Years

Tata Group will continue to be the title sponsor of the India Premier League (IPL) for the next five years (2024–2028). The conglomerate acquired the deal for a record-breaking amount of Rs. 2,500 crore ($300 million). In addition to 2021, Tata Group served as the title sponsor for 2022 and 2023, for the men’s IPL and the women’s Premier League.

IPL has become the world’s richest T20 tournament, as the acquisition price is the highest in the history of the league, and its brand value is estimated to be $8.4 billion.

The IPL chairman, Arun Singh Dhumal, said, “The record-breaking sum of Rs. 2500 crore by TATA Group is a testament to the immense value and appeal that the IPL holds in the world of sports.”

Meanwhile, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a statement that the unprecedented amount represents a new benchmark in the history of the league. Furthermore, it will reaffirm India’s IPL status as a leading international sporting event.

Other league boards find it challenging to compete with the lucrative multi-league contracts offered by the Indian IPL. However, this may exacerbate concerns about the priority of Twenty20 competitions by players over international cricket.

Congo President Felix Tshisekedi Take Over Office For The Second Term

On Saturday, Felix Tshisekedi was sworn in as the president of the second-largest country in Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The 80,000-seat Martyrs sports stadium in Kinshasa was chosen by the leader known as “Fatshi” for the inauguration event.

Despite the political unrest in the country, he will take on the position for a second five-year term.

He won reelection with more than 70% of the votes, but the opposition parties refused to acknowledge his win due to several election irregularities in December. However, the authorities swiftly refuted the allegations of fraudulent votes. According to the election commission, nearly 18 million votes were cast, representing a 40% voter turnout.

Multiple polling locations commenced operations belatedly, while others remained closed entirely and were short on supplies. The election monitoring organisation CENCO characterised the legislative and presidential elections as an electoral catastrophe.

The 60-year-old was sworn in against Joseph Kabila for the first time in January 2019. During his first tenure, he pledged to end the 25-year conflict in the East and improve living conditions in the DRC but failed to do so. He seeks to provide free primary medications once more for the current term and has requested an additional mandate to “consolidate” the gains.
