Rohit Sharma became the second-fastest batter to reach 12,000 runs in men’s One Day Internationals during India’s second ODI against the West Indies in Guwahati on September 30. He reached the milestone in 282 innings, moving past Sachin Tendulkar’s previous mark.
Virat Kohli remains the fastest player to reach 12,000 ODI runs, achieving the feat in 242 innings. Tendulkar reached the milestone in 300 innings, meaning Rohit moved ahead of his former India teammate in the rankings for the milestone.
Rohit needed 73 runs before the match to enter the 12,000-run club. He reached the mark while India were chasing a target of 406 against the West Indies, becoming only the third Indian batter to cross the milestone after Tendulkar and Kohli.
The achievement also made Rohit the seventh batter in men’s ODI history to score 12,000 runs. The list includes Tendulkar, Kohli, Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara, Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardena.
Rohit reached the milestone with a single off West Indies spinner Roston Chase in the 16th over. He had earlier brought up his half-century from 32 deliveries.
The 12,000-run mark adds to Rohit’s record in the 50-over format. He has scored 35 ODI centuries and 62 half-centuries, while his three double-centuries include the highest individual score in men’s ODI cricket, his 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014.
