Marco Rubio Visits India to Advance Trade and Energy Ties

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited India for discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and advancing negotiations on a proposed trade agreement.

Rubio met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Mumbai on October 20. Their discussions covered trade, energy, technology, defence and regional developments, according to reports on the visit.

The talks came after months of friction over US tariffs and India’s purchases of Russian oil. Washington has urged New Delhi to diversify its energy imports, while both governments have continued negotiations on a broader trade arrangement.

Rubio indicated in an interview with The Indian Express that the proposed agreement was close to completion, although outstanding issues still needed to be resolved before it could be finalised.

Energy cooperation remains an important part of the relationship. Rubio was also scheduled to visit Reliance Industries’ refinery complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat, one of the world’s largest refining facilities. The visit reflects interest in India’s refining capacity amid changing global energy markets.

The two countries also cooperate through the Quad, alongside Australia and Japan, and maintain defence and technology partnerships. Security developments in the Indo-Pacific remain central to their strategic engagement.

Trade negotiations have been complicated by disagreements over tariffs, market access and energy imports. Progress towards an agreement could provide greater certainty for businesses operating in both countries, although a final deal depends on resolving the outstanding differences.

Rubio’s visit offered both governments an opportunity to maintain diplomatic engagement while addressing economic concerns. It also highlighted the importance of trade and energy in a relationship that extends beyond security cooperation.
