Bangkok Hosts IMF-World Bank Meetings with 15,000 Delegates

Thailand is hosting the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok from October 12 to 18, with more than 15,000 participants from 191 countries expected to attend. The discussions focus on the global economy, financial stability and development.

The meetings bring together central bank governors, finance ministers, policymakers and business leaders at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, the main venue for the week-long event.

Security has been stepped up at the convention centre and 21 official hotels. Around 500 Tourist Police officers are supporting security operations through patrols, undercover deployments, drone surveillance and motorcade escorts. Measures also cover tourist attractions frequented by delegates.

Bangkok has introduced traffic and administrative measures to manage the event. Government offices are working from home on October 12, 14 and 15. October 16 has been declared a special government and bank holiday, while private companies and state enterprises have been asked to consider similar arrangements.

The Thai Finance Ministry estimates that spending by participants could generate between 1.05 billion and 2.25 billion baht for the domestic economy. More than 320 electric vehicles are being used to transport delegates, helping reduce emissions during the meetings.

The annual meetings provide an opportunity for representatives of international financial institutions and governments to discuss economic conditions and development priorities. Thailand last hosted the event in 1991, making this year’s gathering its return as host after 35 years.
