High schools funded and managed by the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) have recorded their highest graduation rates in the agency’s history. During the 2025/26 academic year, eight BIE high schools graduated every senior in their class, while 13 additional schools achieved graduation rates of 90% or higher.
The Bureau of Indian Education graduation rates now match the U.S. national average of 87–88%, marking a significant improvement from just 51% in 2015. The achievement represents a major milestone for Native American schools, which have historically faced challenges in education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
The improvement follows several reforms introduced by the BIE. These include modernised data systems, real-time student performance dashboards, pacing guides, and instructional resources that help educators identify struggling students earlier. Officials also updated reporting methods so that students transferring between schools are no longer counted as dropouts.
The agency has continued to offer flexible remote learning options introduced during the pandemic. These programmes support students balancing education with caregiving or work responsibilities. Expanded vocational and trade education has also helped keep students engaged by providing more career-focused learning opportunities.
BIE Director Tony Dearman described the results as a testament to the collective efforts of students, families, educators, and tribal communities. He said the achievement demonstrates what is possible when communities work together and showcases Native American student success on a national stage.
