Germany, UAE Move to Strengthen Strategic Ties With New Deals

Germany and the United Arab Emirates are set to sign several agreements worth billions of dollars as they look to deepen cooperation in investment, artificial intelligence and energy.

The agreements are expected to be signed during UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit to Berlin. UAE Minister of State Lana Nusseibeh said the deals would open a new stage in relations between the two countries.

Germany and the UAE already have longstanding partnerships in several sectors. Their non-oil trade is worth about $15.5 billion a year.

Both countries are now looking to broaden their strategic relationships as geopolitical uncertainty grows. The continuing conflict with Iran and changes in their respective relationships with the United States have added to the push for closer ties.

Nusseibeh said a stronger UAE-Germany relationship could connect Europe’s industrial and technological strengths with capital, energy and growth opportunities across the Gulf, Asia and Africa.

The agreements will include a dedicated framework for technology cooperation. Researchers and investors from both countries are expected to be brought together as part of the initiative.

Energy transition will also be a major area of cooperation. The new agreements will build on existing work between Germany and the UAE in renewable energy, hydrogen and energy efficiency.

Nusseibeh did not disclose the specific agreements that would be signed. She described the visit as a statement of intent about the future of the bilateral relationship.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to the Gulf in February also reflected the growing importance both sides place on closer ties.
