India has crossed 300 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity, reaching 300.50 GW as of July 31, 2026. The milestone takes the country past 60% of its 500 GW non-fossil capacity target for 2030, marking a major step in its clean energy transition.
According to the latest figures, India’s renewable energy capacity is led by solar power at 164.59 GW, followed by wind power at 58.14 GW. Large and small hydro projects account for 57.24 GW, while bio-power contributes 11.75 GW. Nuclear power adds another 8.78 GW to the country’s non-fossil capacity.
Non-fossil sources now account for more than 54% of India’s total installed electricity generation capacity of around 552 GW. Solar has been the biggest driver of this growth, rising from just 2.8 GW in 2014 to nearly 165 GW in 2026. Wind capacity has also increased from 21 GW to more than 58 GW during the same period.
India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil capacity during 2025-26. This included 44.6 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind capacity. Renewable electricity generation also increased from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15 to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26.
Domestic manufacturing is expanding alongside this capacity growth. The Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar PV modules has crossed 200 GW, compared with just 2.3 GW in 2014. This growth has been supported by the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for high-efficiency solar modules.
The government sees the India 300 GW non-fossil fuel capacity milestone as important for climate action, energy independence and industrial competitiveness. India is also developing its green hydrogen ecosystem through the National Green Hydrogen Mission, to strengthen its position as a global producer and exporter.
