India and Scotland have discussed expanding cooperation in financial services, renewable energy, higher education and tourism during a meeting between Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney in New Delhi on 21 October.
The discussions formed part of Swinney’s visit to India, which runs from 20 to 27 October and includes engagements in New Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The visit aims to strengthen trade and investment links between Scotland and India.
Financial services emerged as one area for closer engagement, alongside renewable energy and education. Both sides are seeking opportunities to build partnerships that support investment, skills development and commercial exchange.
Scotland has been promoting its strengths in clean energy, higher education, tourism and other sectors as it looks to expand its international economic relationships. India, meanwhile, offers a large market for companies seeking investment opportunities and partnerships in technology, infrastructure and sustainable development.
The visit follows the UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, which has created new possibilities for businesses seeking to expand trade between the two markets. Scotland’s government has highlighted opportunities for Scottish industries under the wider agreement, particularly in energy, life sciences, education and digital services.
Swinney’s programme includes meetings with business leaders and representatives from sectors looking to strengthen their presence in India. The delegation also includes organisations from Scotland’s food and drink, tourism and higher education sectors.
The announcement did not detail specific new agreements or investment commitments.
