India and Sweden Strengthen Ties for Green Steel Innovation and Sustainable Growth

Bhupathiraju Srinivas Varma, Union Minister of State for Steel, met with Ms Sara Modig, State Secretary to Sweden’s Minister for Energy, Business, and Industry, in New Delhi to discuss collaboration in sustainable steel production. The discussions, which took place at the Ministry of Steel, were attended by Sweden’s Ambassador to India, Mr Jan Thesleff, and senior Swedish delegates.

Minister Varma emphasised India’s rapid rise in the steel sector, as well as the government’s commitment to infrastructure and industrial growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He stated that the country’s crude steel production target of 300 million tonnes by 2030 indicates India’s determination to become a global manufacturing hub.

He further added that India’s steel consumption continues to expand by 11 to 13 per cent each year, owing to large-scale public infrastructure projects, despite low global steel demand.

Both sides discussed research collaborations to create Green Steel and low-carbon technologies to help achieve global climate goals. Minister Varma also invited Sweden to participate in Bharat Steel 2026, an international steel conference scheduled for April 16-17, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

The dialogue reaffirmed both countries’ shared visions for innovation, sustainability, and environmentally responsible economic growth.
