India break T20 World Cup record with a thrilling victory over the USA

India has emerged as one of the most dominant forces in T20 International cricket in recent years, driven by an aggressive brand of play and consistent performances. Under head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, the Men in Blue have enjoyed a remarkable run, winning seven consecutive bilateral series and establishing themselves as a formidable unit in world cricket.

Their dominance has extended to the ICC T20 World Cup as well. With a thrilling 29-run victory over the USA in the opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, India registered their ninth consecutive win in the tournament, the longest winning streak by any team in T20 World Cup history.

Suryakumar Yadav played a pivotal role in the win, producing a captain’s knock of 84 off 49 balls when India were in serious trouble. The Indian batting order struggled, collapsing to 77-6 after nearly 13 overs, but Surya’s composure and attacking stroke play rescued the innings and helped India post a defendable total.

This winning streak began against Ireland in 2024, carried through a title-winning campaign, and has continued into the current edition. India now stands alone at the top of the all-time list, surpassing South Africa and Australia, who previously held eight-match streaks.

With upcoming matches against Namibia, Pakistan, and the Netherlands, India looks well placed to extend their historic run even further.
