Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has emphasized that India should aim to achieve 100% ethanol blending in fuel, calling it a transformative step toward energy self-reliance and environmental sustainability.
Speaking at a recent event, Gadkari highlighted the success of the government’s ethanol blending programme, which has already made significant progress in reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports. He noted that increasing ethanol use not only cuts carbon emissions but also benefits farmers by creating additional demand for agricultural produce such as sugarcane and maize.
India has been steadily increasing its ethanol blending percentage in petrol, with targets set under the National Bio-Energy Mission. The push toward 100% blending, though ambitious, aligns with broader goals of reducing crude oil imports and promoting cleaner energy alternatives.
Gadkari also stressed the importance of innovation in biofuel technologies, including the development of flex-fuel engines and second-generation ethanol production. He pointed out that a strong policy framework and industry participation would be key to achieving this vision.
The minister’s remarks come amid rising global concerns over energy security and climate change, positioning ethanol as a viable solution for a greener and more self-sufficient future.
