Founded in 1992 as an industrial training institute, today Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology is one of the fastest growing private deemed universities in the country. The brainchild of Achyuta Samanta, C R Mishra and P K Mishra, the institute is a part of the KIIT society. From its humble beginnings as a vocational training centre, with only two staff members and 12 students, it has developed into a leading university with a strong interdisciplinary culture. Boasting of 23 world-class campuses and 30,000+ students, the institute offers 34 undergraduate, 32 postgraduate, 10 integrated, 11 Ph.D. and 7 postdoctoral research programmes in the fields of science and engineering, medical science, management, law, film and media, humanities and yoga and sports.

The institute has contributed immensely in making the nation proud by producing notable alumni like sprinters Dutee Chand, Amiya Kumar Mallick, and the senior scientist at CSIR – Dr. Soumen Mandal. Within just 7 years of its inception, it was declared as a deemed university in 2004 by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India and was conferred with Category A status in 2014. Despite being a fairly young institution, it has performed incredibly well in the rankings conducted by various national and international associations. In 2019, it was recognised as an Institute of Eminence by the Ministry of HRD. It has also been granted Tier-1 accreditation by the National Board of Accreditation. It was ranked as the 23rd best Indian university in the overall category by the Times Higher Education in its Asia University Rankings for 2022. Moreover, it is also India’s first QS 5-star rated university (2021).
