Kenya has officially bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, potentially becoming Africa’s first host of the flagship event. Nairobi is competing against London, Rome, and Munich, waiting for hosts to be announced after September’s championship in Budapest.
Kenya’s Local Bid Committee, chaired by legendary distance-runner, Ibrahim Hussein presented its proposal to the World Athletics Bid Evaluation Panel. The final bid documents were submitted on August 6, following an evaluation visit in May.
Kasarani Stadium forms the centrepiece of Kenya’s proposal, with Nyayo Stadium serving as the official training venue. Kasarani has been refurbished to increase capacity from 48,000 to 60,000 spectators.
Kenya says the bid has strong government backing, including commitments covering security, infrastructure, and organisation. Kenya also points to its exceptional athletics record, including 72 World Championship and 38 Olympic gold medals.
The country has previously hosted major athletics events, including the 2007 World Cross Country Championships and 2021 World U20 Championships. Kenya also hopes to host the 2031 edition if selected.
