Laos Targets Data Centres and AI to Diversify Its Economy

Laos is seeking investment in data centres, artificial intelligence, FinTech and other digital industries under its 2026-2030 investment plan.

The strategy aims to reduce reliance on natural resources while attracting higher-value projects and creating skilled jobs.

Deputy Finance Minister Phonevanh Outhavong said the government wants investments that introduce modern technology and connect Lao businesses with regional and global production chains.

Data centres are a particular focus due to rising demand for cloud computing and storage. Laos also sees its hydropower resources as an advantage for supplying the large amounts of electricity these facilities require.

The wider plan prioritises solar and wind energy, clean agriculture, eco-tourism and the circular economy. The government is also seeking technology transfer and stronger digital skills through foreign investment.

In the first seven months of 2026, Laos approved 34 concession and controlled-activity projects worth $8.5 billion. Actual capital inflows reached $1.06 billion during the period.

Laos expects private domestic and foreign investment to provide 64.4% of the funding needed for its 2026-2030 development plan.
