Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted India’s growing ability to develop and scale its own telecom and digital technologies, saying the country is moving from being a technology market to a developer and exporter of technology.
Speaking around the 10th edition of the India Mobile Congress in New Delhi, Modi pointed to the expansion of indigenous telecom technologies and India’s increasing role in global technology development.
The India Mobile Congress 2026 is being held from October 7 to 10 at Yashobhoomi. Its theme, “Scale Without Boundaries”, focuses on digital innovation, next-generation connectivity and technology-led growth.
India has expanded its domestic capabilities across areas including 5G, optical communications, semiconductors, artificial intelligence and emerging 6G technologies. Government programmes have supported research, product development and testing of indigenous telecom systems.
The Bharat 6G Alliance is working towards making India a contributor to the design, development and deployment of 6G technology by 2030. The government has also introduced measures to support Indian startups and companies participating in global telecom standards.
India’s 5G rollout has expanded rapidly, with services available in 99.9 per cent of districts as of February 2026, according to the government. More than 523,000 5G base stations had been installed by that time.
The government has described the shift as part of a broader effort to strengthen India’s technology manufacturing and innovation ecosystem.
IMC 2026 is expected to bring together technology companies, startups, investors and policymakers from more than 100 countries, with discussions covering next-generation connectivity and emerging digital technologies.
