Nathan Thomas has become the youngest male professor in history, earning a Guinness World Record after teaching at Miami Dade College at just 18 years and 346 days old. Nathan Thomas, the youngest male professor, broke a 306 year old record previously held by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at the age of 19.
Born on September 9, 2004, Thomas began teaching COP 2270: C for Engineers at Miami Dade College in August 2023, instructing students who were close to his own age.
The Guinness World Record professor followed an extraordinary academic journey. Thomas enrolled at Miami Dade College through dual enrollment at the age of 10 before transferring to Florida International University at 14. By the age of 18, he had earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering, graduating with honours.
The achievement also places Thomas just 16 days younger than Alia Sabur, who remains the youngest ever professor overall after beginning her teaching career at 18 years and 362 days in 2008.
Speaking to Guinness World Records, Thomas said age becomes irrelevant once people enter a learning environment. He added that his focus has always been on helping students succeed, believing that dedication and effort matter more than age.
