Piyush Goyal Hails Passenger Vehicle Sales Surge as Proof of Make in India’s Growing Strength

India’s automotive sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience in May 2026, with the passenger vehicle market registering a stellar 23% year-on-year growth due to strong domestic demand and the Make in India manufacturing ecosystem.

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal described the figures as evidence that India’s growth engine is in top gear. The primary reason for the surge is Maruti Suzuki India, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra. The minister added that the rising appetite for domestically manufactured vehicles reflects deepening consumer confidence in India’s industrial capabilities.

All major parts of the industry recorded strong growth. Maruti Suzuki posted its highest-ever monthly sales volume of 2,42,688 units, achieving an all-time high in domestic dispatches. Hyundai Motor India sustained strong year-on-year domestic growth, while Mahindra and Mahindra reported a 20% expansion across both passenger and commercial vehicle segments. Toyota Kirloskar Motor also posted 7% growth for the month, crossing a significant milestone in strong hybrid electric vehicle sales in India.

Goyal credited the performance to an improving manufacturing ecosystem and the transformative impact of the Make in India vision, calling it a reflection of the aspirations of 140 crore Indians.

Industry observers note that the growth spans across passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and utility segments, suggesting structural demand rather than a seasonal spike, reinforcing expectations of a sustained upward trajectory through FY27.
