Piyush Goyal, UK Trade Secretary Discuss Innovation and Technology Partnerships

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a virtual meeting with UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Peter Kyle on Sunday to discuss expanding India-UK collaboration in innovation, technology, research, startups and emerging sectors.

On social media, Goyal shared that discussions focused on strengthening bilateral partnerships that could drive economic growth and create shared prosperity for both countries. The leaders explored new opportunities for cooperation in high-growth and innovation-driven industries.

The meeting comes as India and the United Kingdom continue efforts to deepen economic engagement and advance negotiations on the proposed Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). India is also working towards operationalising the agreement alongside other major Free Trade Agreements currently under discussion.

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal stated that both countries are close to operationalising the trade agreement; however, certain issues linked to recent UK steel measures are still being resolved, noting both sides are working together to identify a “creative solution” to address the concerns.

Meanwhile, UK Member of Parliament Bob Blackman said several key issues, including tariffs and market access, require further discussion before the agreement can be finalised. He also highlighted the growing educational relationship between the two countries, with British schools and universities expanding their presence in India.

Apart from trade and education, they discussed the importance of stronger cooperation in defence, technology and strategic partnerships. India and the UK have expanded collaboration across trade, investment, defence, education and innovation in recent years, reflecting growth in multiple sectors.
