Singapore Unveils Biological Computing System Using Living Human Neurons

DayOne Data Centers has launched Singapore’s first Biological Data Center Prototype with Cortical Labs and NUS Medicine.

The prototype features a 20-unit CL1 biological computing system operating within a research environment at NUS Medicine. The system combines living neurons grown from stem cells with silicon hardware to process information.

The neurons receive electrical signals, respond to inputs, and adapt over time. The technology aims to provide a more energy-efficient alternative for specific computing applications.

The project brings together NUS Medicine’s neurobiology expertise, Cortical Labs’ biological computing technology, and DayOne’s digital infrastructure capabilities.

Potential applications include neuro-inspired AI, biomedical modelling, drug discovery, neurological research, cybersecurity, and robotics.

DayOne CEO Jamie Khoo said the project reflects Singapore’s ambitions to develop sustainable digital infrastructure alongside AI capabilities.

The prototype also aligns with Singapore’s Green Data Center Roadmap, which promotes greater energy efficiency as demand for AI and cloud computing grows.

DayOne said the project could eventually serve as a model for deploying biological computing infrastructure in other markets.
