India’s teqball campaign at the Asian Games got underway on September 19, with three events scheduled ahead of the opening ceremony at Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya.
Quimcy Joaquim Dsouza competed in the women’s singles semi-final against Indonesia’s Sumaya at 6:30am IST. Dsouza had reached the last four after topping Group A, defeating Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto 2-1 before beating Cambodia’s Koemyean Dy 2-0.
India also featured in two doubles events, with Dsouza and Mohamed Anas Imran Beg competing in the mixed doubles, while Beg and Declan Marshall Gonsalves took part in the men’s doubles semi-final.
Teqball made its Asian Games debut as a medal sport at Aichi-Nagoya.
Later in the day, the opening ceremony was held at Paloma Mizuho Stadium, with Manu Bhaker and Pawan Sehrawat carrying the Indian flag. Sehrawat replaced shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor after an issue with the ceremonial kit.
The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games are being held in Japan from September 19 to October 4.
