Researchers across Türkiye have identified 13 previously unknown plant species, highlighting the country’s diverse ecosystems.
The discoveries span regions from the Aegean coast to eastern Anatolia and were published in the first e-bulletin of the Nature Conservation and National Parks General Directorate.
New species were identified in Elazığ, Bitlis, Hatay, Muğla, İzmir and Artvin. The discoveries include new onions, rock mustard, hyacinth, bellflower, mountain thyme and elderberry.
Researchers also identified new oriental bindweed and cornflower species, alongside a crane’s-bill subspecies and a forget-me-not in northern Türkiye.
The discoveries add to Türkiye’s approximately 13,000 known plant species. Around 4,000 of these are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else.
The findings also contribute to the Illustrated Flora of Türkiye Project, a major 62-volume botanical reference supported by the Ali Nihat Gökyiğit Foundation.
The project aims to document Türkiye’s plant diversity through detailed botanical illustrations and scientific classifications using Turkish names.
The latest discoveries underline the importance of continued botanical research across Türkiye’s varied landscapes and climate zones.
