Australia’s Solar Revolution to Deliver Free Electricity for Millions by 2026

Millions of Australians will soon benefit from free electricity as the country’s solar boom alters its energy environment. The government has announced that from July 2026, homes in New South Wales, South Australia, and parts of Queensland will receive up to three hours of free electricity each day through the new Solar Sharer plan.

This initiative reflects years of rapid rooftop solar adoption. Solar installation costs in Australia have fallen to roughly one-third of those in the United States, prompting more than one in every three houses to adopt solar. Energy Minister Chris Bowen stated that the country is now producing enough clean energy to share its benefits widely.

Residents who do not have rooftop panels, such as those living in apartments, will also benefit from their neighbours’ solar power under the scheme. All participants will require smart meters to track their usage.

Although the exact free hours have yet to be determined, midday slots between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. are expected. The program intends to shift energy consumption from the night to the day, when renewable output is at its peak, easing grid pressure and reducing reliance on coal and gas.
