Leylah Fernandez won the Singapore Tennis Open on September 27, beating Australia’s Talia Gibson 7-5, 6-0 in the final. It is the Canadian’s sixth career WTA title, her first of 2026, and her second at WTA 500 level after the Washington title in July 2025.
Gibson, playing her first tour-level final, twice recovered from breaks and held a set point at 5-4 in the opener. Fernandez saved it, broke for 6-5 and took the set 7-5. She then won the final nine games of the match, sweeping the second set 6-0 to finish in one hour and 38 minutes. She won 81.8 per cent of her first-serve points in that set and converted six of 12 break points.
The sixth seed, ranked world No. 31, dropped only one set all week. She beat top seed and Roland Garros champion Mirra Andreeva 6-2, 7-5 in the quarter-finals, then came back to defeat Roland Garros runner-up Maja Chwalinska 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the semi-finals.
Gibson, 22, reached the final by beating Maria Sakkari 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in the quarter-finals. She then advanced by walkover when Tatiana Prozorova was unable to play after a concussion in doubles. Gibson is projected to move into the world’s top 40.
The win is Fernandez’s first title since Osaka in October 2025. She said she must reset immediately for the next event in Beijing, which she expects to be tougher.
