Kohli’s 55th ODI Hundred Leads India to Comfortable West Indies Chase

India beat the West Indies by eight wickets in the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27, chasing 296 with 50 balls to spare. Virat Kohli finished on 139 not out from 88 balls, and India reached 300 for two in 41.4 overs.

Kohli’s 74-ball hundred was his 55th in ODIs and his third-fastest. He hit nine sixes, his most in an ODI innings. The knock took him to 15,080 ODI runs, making him the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar, who finished on 18,426, to pass 15,000. Kohli reached the mark in 303 innings, 74 fewer than Tendulkar’s 377.

He also became the first player to score 7,000 ODI runs in a single country, reaching 7,006 in India and passing Tendulkar’s 6,976. It was his 86th international century and his 10th ODI hundred against West Indies, the joint-most by any batter against one opponent.

Shubman Gill made 110 from 108 balls, his 10th ODI hundred, reached in 67 innings, the fastest by an Indian. He and Kohli added 151 for the second wicket after Rohit Sharma fell in the 12th over of a 74-run opening stand. Ruturaj Gaikwad was unbeaten on 13 as Kohli sealed the win with successive boundaries.

India lead the three-match series 1-0. Kohli, 37, announced days earlier that 2027 will be his final world cup appearance.
