Germany and IEA to Co-Host 2027 Clean Energy Ministerials in Paris

The meetings will focus on clean-energy innovation and deployment

Germany and the International Energy Agency (IEA) will co-host the 18th Clean Energy Ministerial and the 12th Mission Innovation Ministerial in Paris in 2027. The announcement was made on October 13 at the 2026 joint ministerial meeting in Saudi Arabia.

The two initiatives bring governments together to advance clean-energy innovation. The Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) promotes cooperation on clean-energy policies and technologies, while Mission Innovation focuses on accelerating the development and deployment of new solutions.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said the agency would work with Germany and participating members to advance solutions that strengthen energy security and affordability while reducing emissions.

Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Katherina Reiche, highlighted the importance of international partnerships in advancing the energy transition. She also stressed the need to make clean-energy technologies more widely available through practical cooperation.

The IEA has hosted the Clean Energy Ministerial secretariat since 2018 and the Mission Innovation secretariat since 2026. Its role provides an established framework for coordinating government efforts across both initiatives.

The 2027 meetings are expected to bring policymakers and industry representatives together to discuss clean-energy priorities. Discussions will focus on strengthening international cooperation and moving promising technologies from development towards wider deployment.

Hosting the meetings in Paris will place Germany and the IEA at the centre of the next round of discussions on clean-energy innovation. The specific dates for the 2027 ministerials have not yet been announced.
