India and the United Kingdom are projected to overtake Japan in nominal GDP rankings in 2027, according to the International Monetary Fund’s October 2026 World Economic Outlook, released on October 13.
Japan’s economy is forecast to reach US$4.34 trillion in 2026, placing it fourth globally behind the United States, China and Germany. The UK is projected at US$4.27 trillion followed by India at US $4.06 trillion.
The rankings are expected to change in 2027. India’s economy is projected to reach US $4.52 trillion , followed by the UK at US$4.49 trillion and Japan at US$4.47 trillion. If these estimates hold, India would rank fourth, the UK fifth and Japan sixth, assuming Germany remains ahead of all three.
Japan’s changing position reflects pressure on the value of its economy in dollar terms, partly due to the yen’s depreciation against the US dollar. Currency movements can affect international GDP rankings even when domestic economic output continues to grow.
The projected gap between the UK and Japan is just US$20 billion, leaving their relative positions vulnerable to changes in exchange rates and economic performance. The figures remain forecasts and may change as conditions evolve.
India’s projected rise would mark a further shift in the global economic rankings, while the UK’s expected move ahead of Japan would reverse their current order. The IMF’s estimates provide a snapshot of how the relative size of major economies could change over the coming year.
