Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi on September 17. The three-day event, being held from September 17 to 19, has the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem”.
The event brings together more than 600 companies and delegates from 52 countries. Six countries are also represented through dedicated pavilions at the exhibition, which is focused on developments across the semiconductor industry.
In his address, Modi said India is expanding its semiconductor ecosystem and seeking to position itself as a trusted manufacturing destination. He also called on industry leaders to increase research and development in the country and urged Indian researchers working abroad to contribute to the development of advanced technologies.
The government’s India Semiconductor Mission is a central part of the country’s semiconductor programme. Twelve projects have been approved under the first phase of the Semicon India Programme, covering efforts to build manufacturing and other capabilities within the domestic ecosystem.
SEMICON India is being held as India expands its semiconductor manufacturing base. Earlier this year, Modi inaugurated the Kaynes Semicon plant at Sanand in Gujarat, where commercial semiconductor production began. The government launched the India Semiconductor Mission in 2021 as part of its broader effort to develop domestic semiconductor capabilities.
