Lamine Yamal celebrated his 19th birthday with a simple wish, helping Spain defeat France and book a place in the FIFA World Cup final.
Ahead of the blockbuster semi-final, the Barcelona winger joked that despite receiving plenty of birthday presents, that is the only gift he truly wants. “What I want as a present is a win,” Yamal said, making it clear that football remained his top priority.
The teenage sensation spent his birthday training with his Spain teammates before attending the pre-match press conference, where he revealed he had bought himself a luxury watch rather than receiving it as a gift.
Yamal insisted he was not feeling the pressure despite the magnitude of the occasion. “There are much harder things in life than a football match,” he said, adding that he was focused only on helping Spain reach the final.
The youngster has been one of Spain’s standout performers throughout the tournament, earning praise for his maturity and match-winning displays. Ahead of the semi-final, he dismissed suggestions that Spain should fear France, saying the European champions know what they need to do.
