Malaysia, India Seek Stronger E&E and Semiconductor Cooperation

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for stronger cooperation with India in the electrical and electronics (E&E) and semiconductor sectors. He said closer ties could help both countries build on their existing capabilities and strengthen their positions in the regional technology industry.

Speaking in Calicut during his working visit to India, Anwar said Malaysia was positioning itself as a key player in Southeast Asia’s E&E and semiconductor industries. He also pointed to India’s growing strength in the same sectors as an opportunity for closer cooperation.

Around 30 companies from India, Malaysia and Gulf countries took part in a business engagement during the visit. The participants included companies from the semiconductor and engineering sectors. Others represented artificial intelligence, digital technology and renewable energy.

Anwar said the discussions could strengthen business-to-business links and create opportunities in higher-value industries. He also called for greater two-way investment between Malaysia and India, including investment flows between Malaysia and Kerala.

India remains Malaysia’s largest trading partner in South Asia. Bilateral trade reached US$18.55 billion in 2025, according to figures cited by the Malaysian prime minister.

The semiconductor discussion comes as Southeast Asia expands its role in global electronics supply chains. Malaysia is seeking to strengthen its position in the sector, while India is also developing domestic semiconductor manufacturing and technology capabilities.

Anwar’s visit also included discussions on expanding trade and investment links between Malaysia and Kerala. He said the historical connections between Kerala and Southeast Asia could provide a foundation for deeper economic cooperation.
