The Maldives has formed its first-ever national women’s futsal team, marking an important moment for women’s sports in the island nation. The team will compete in the inaugural SAFF Women’s Futsal Championship, scheduled to take place in Thailand from January 13 to 25.
This tournament will mark the international debut of the Maldivian women’s futsal side and the first time the country is represented in regional-level competitive futsal. Officials and players have described the move as a long-awaited step towards creating more sporting opportunities for women beyond traditional outdoor football.
The squad was selected after the conclusion of the Women’s Football League, organised by the Football Association of Maldives, to identify talent for both football and futsal. Despite some logistical challenges during the league, national training camps were held, allowing selectors to finalise the team.
The final squad includes 14 players, most of whom have prior experience representing the Maldives at the senior football level. National team regulars Mariyam Rifa and Raniya Ibrahim are part of the lineup, while Fathimath Faiha Ali of New Radiant Sports Club is the only player selected directly from domestic competition without previous national team experience.
The Maldives will open their campaign against India on January 13, followed by matches against Nepal, Pakistan, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Officials believe the team’s participation could boost support and visibility for women’s futsal in the country.
