Dubai Airport officially overtakes Atlanta in the US as the World’s Busiest hub

Dubai International Airport became the world’s busiest airport by seat capacity in January 2026, overtaking Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to data from aviation analytics firm OAG.

The ranking is based on total scheduled airline seat capacity across both international and domestic flights. OAG’s figures show that Dubai International Airport handled around 5.5 million seats in January 2026, placing it ahead of Atlanta, which recorded approximately 4.9 million seats during the same period. Tokyo Haneda Airport ranked third globally.

This change marks a major shift in global aviation rankings. Atlanta had held the top position for several years, supported mainly by its large domestic flight network within the United States. The latest ranking comes as Dubai International continues to see strong passenger growth. The airport closed 2025 with record traffic levels and carried that momentum into the new year.

According to Dubai Airports, it handled about 8.8 million passengers in December 2025, up from 8.3 million passengers in December 2024. This made December the busiest month ever recorded at the airport.

Passenger numbers rose further in early January. On January 3, the Airport processed 324,000 passengers, the highest single-day total in its history. The following day, January 4, saw another near-record with 322,000 passengers, highlighting the airport’s growing global demand.
