The United States has introduced new visa regulations for foreign students and exchange visitors, updating long-standing immigration rules to strengthen oversight while preserving the integrity of temporary visa programmes.
Under the revised framework, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has replaced the previous system of indefinite visa admissions with fixed periods of stay for F, J, and I visas, which cover international students, exchange visitors, and foreign media representatives. The changes are aimed at ensuring visa holders complete the purpose of their visit without remaining in the country indefinitely.
The new rules also clarify that visa holders may receive extensions if they continue to meet programme requirements. Students will be permitted additional time to complete academic programmes approved by their institutions, while exchange visitors can extend their stay if authorised under existing programme guidelines.
According to the DHS, the changes are intended to reduce uncertainty, improve consistency across visa categories, and strengthen the government’s ability to monitor compliance with immigration regulations. The revised rules make it more difficult for visa holders to switch to unrelated immigration categories without meeting the required legal conditions.
The update comes as the United States hosts a large international student population, with more than one million foreign students enrolled at American colleges and universities. Officials said the changes are designed to maintain the primary purpose of student and exchange visas while ensuring better oversight of temporary admissions.
The revised US student visa regulations are expected to affect both future applicants and current visa holders seeking extensions or changes to their immigration status.
