Uttar Pradesh integrates solar energy system with rural water supply under Jal Jeevan Mission

The Uttar Pradesh government has integrated solar energy systems with rural water supply projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission, aiming to improve sustainability and reduce dependence on conventional electricity. The initiative has led to the installation of over 33,000 solar-powered water supply schemes across thousands of villages in the state.

According to reports, the project currently benefits nearly 2 crore rural households by ensuring a more reliable drinking water supply while lowering operational costs. Officials said the integration of solar energy with water infrastructure will also reduce carbon emissions and contribute to India’s broader clean energy goals. Uttar Pradesh authorities believe the model can serve as an example for other states working to modernise rural utilities through renewable energy.

The schemes are being implemented under the State Water and Sanitation Mission in coordination with the Namami Gange Department and other agencies. Experts have highlighted that solar-powered pumping systems are especially useful in remote rural regions where electricity supply can be irregular. The initiative is expected to strengthen rural infrastructure while supporting environmentally sustainable development in the state.
