Xi, Modi, and Putin Address Ukraine Conflict as BRICS Eyes Expansion

Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other BRICS leaders met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to address the conflict in Ukraine, as the Kremlin convened a huge meeting demonstrating that Western efforts to isolate Russia had failed.

Goldman Sachs founded the BRICS group, which now accounts for 45% of the global population and 35% of the global GDP, to highlight the growing economic dominance of major emerging nations.

Despite its economic strength, BRICS confronts internal disagreements about how rapid expansion can affect its geopolitical aim. President Putin, who is facing war crime allegations, opened the Kazan summit by emphasising the importance of cautious deliberation while expanding the union, which has over 30 countries interested in joining. Putin emphasised that any enlargement must strike a balance in order to keep the organisation functioning.

Putin highlighted the need for strengthening ties with the Global South and East but emphasised that BRICS must also address “acute regional conflicts,” such as Ukraine and the Middle East. As the ongoing conflict in Ukraine hovered over the conference, PM Modi repeated his wish for peace while Xi met privately with Putin.
