The British Lightweight Women’s double sculls (LW2x) won Team GB’s second rowing gold medal at the Paris Olympics with a near-perfect performance. Initially, the highly rated Romanians and New Zealanders took the lead, but the British crew quickly overtook them. They were 0.12 seconds ahead at the 500-meter mark, about a second by halfway, and almost a length ahead as they crossed the finish line.
This is the final Olympic gold medal in lightweight rowing, as Emily and Imogen will be the only champions in this class. Imogen expressed mixed emotions, emphasising her relief and satisfaction at attaining the only goal they had left to complete. They have won two World and European championships since barely losing out on medals in Tokyo 2020.
Emily reflected on their journey, saying that their race strategy had become second nature, and their confidence had paid off.
In the Men’s Pairs (M2-), Ollie Wynne-Griffith and Tom George won silver, narrowly losing to Croatia’s Sinkovic brothers. Despite the defeat, Tom and Ollie were proud of their performance. Chloe Brew and Rebecca Edwards placed 12th overall in the Women’s Pair (W2-).
