Harry Brook has been named the new captain of the men’s ODI and T20I teams by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The decision was announced via an official social media post earlier today. Brook’s promotion comes after England’s poor Champions Trophy campaign, which saw Jos Buttler step down from the leadership role.
Under Buttler’s captaincy, England struggled in the tournament and was eliminated in the group round. The team’s dismal performance drew heavy attention, ultimately leading to Buttler’s dismissal. As expected, the ECB has appointed Brook, a rising star in English cricket, to take head of the white-ball formats.
Brook expressed his pleasure, calling it a “real honour” to lead England. He reminisced his early cricketing days in Burley, Wharfedale, and thanked his family and coaches for their unwavering support. The young batter is eager to lead the team with ambition, striving for success in bilateral series, World Cups, and other international competitions.
Brook has already had a huge influence on the world level. In 26 ODIs, he has 816 runs at an average of 34, but in 44 T20Is, he has 798 runs at an impressive strike rate of 146.2.
