The 2023 ODI World Cup in India had an economic impact of ₹11,637 crore (USD 1.39 billion), according to Nielsen’s Economic Impact Assessment for the International Cricket Council. Tourism played a big role, with domestic and foreign tourists attending matches, increasing revenue in the housing, travel, and food industries.
According to ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice, the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 brought in USD 861.4 million (7,200 crore) for host cities through tourism. Due to the large number of visitors, spending on lodging, transportation, and food and beverages was what drove tourism’s overall economic impact.
Secondary spending in the economy provided USD 515.7 million (₹4,300 crore), accounting for 37% of the overall impact. However, the ICC did not specify if this amount reflected the actual money generated.
Australia halted India’s unbroken streak by winning their sixth World Cup title. According to the study, the event drew a record 1.25 million fans, with approximately 75% of them witnessing their first ICC 50-over match.
The ICC data demonstrates the importance of major sporting events in generating economic advantages and tourism growth in host countries.
