PM Modi Congratulates South Korea’s Lee Jae-myung on Presidential Victory

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to Lee Jae-myung on his election as President of the Republic of Korea. Modi underlined his desire to work closely with the next leader to strengthen the India-ROK Special Strategic Partnership.

In his greeting to X, Modi said, “Congratulations to Mr Lee Jae-myung on being elected President of the Republic of Korea. I look forward to working with you to expand and strengthen the India-ROK Special Strategic Partnership.”

Lee Jae-myung, of South Korea’s centre-left Democratic Party, officially assumed office following a closely anticipated snap election. The election was prompted by the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, whose administration had experienced substantial political turmoil. Lee’s win marks the start of a new political era in South Korea.

Lee Jae-myung won 49.4% of the vote, defeating conservative candidates Kim Moon-soo, who received 41.2%. Kim’s campaign was significantly impacted by internal party disagreements and the influence of a third-party candidate, resulting in a split in the conservative vote.

Lee’s term began immediately following the National Election Commission’s certification of the results. His presidency is likely to focus on healing divisions, boosting South Korea’s international connections, and addressing domestic challenges.
