PM Modi Visits Cyprus to Boost India-Europe Trade Connectivity

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Cyprus on a two-day strategic visit to boost bilateral ties and explore Cyprus’ potential role in the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC). His visit comes en route to the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada.

The IMEC proposal envisions a significant marine and rail trade corridor connecting India to Europe via the Middle East, thereby increasing logistical efficiency and economic integration. During his visit, Modi and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides intended to meet with business leaders and hold official talks.

President Christodoulides emphasised Cyprus’s potential role as a European entry point for the corridor, noting that one of the talks’ primary goals is to ease India’s connection to Europe via the larger Middle East region and Cyprus. The visit comes at a critical time, as parts of the Middle East are experiencing increasing instability and war.

This diplomatic engagement is part of India’s overall goal to strengthen ties with European countries. Cyprus is due to take over the rotating presidency of the European Union in early 2026, adding geopolitical weight to bilateral talks. India and Cyprus have historically close ties due to their common membership in the Commonwealth.
