Sinner Claims Historic US Open Win as First Italian Champion, Bags ₹30 Crore

Jannik Sinner, the world number one, became the first Italian to win the US Open after defeating Taylor Fritz of the US in the 2024 final. The Italian tennis player won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, to secure his second Grand Slam championship of the year, following his victory at the Australian Open earlier in the season. Sinner’s impressive performance not only secured his top ATP rating but also resulted in a whopping ₹30 crore award.

Taylor Fritz was extremely disappointed with his defeat because it prevented him from becoming the first American men’s singles Grand Slam champion in 21 years. Despite his defeat, Fritz moved five spots in the ATP rankings, re-entering the Top 10, a big accomplishment in his career.

The defending US Open champion, Novak Djokovic, fell to fourth in the rankings after losing to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in the third round. Meanwhile, Germany’s Alexander Zverev, the runner-up in the 2020 edition, replaced Djokovic in third position.

Frances Tiafoe rose to 16th after reaching the semifinals, while Britain’s Jack Draper made history as the first British man to reach the US Open semifinals since Andy Murray, who is now ranked 20th.
