Thailand’s Puripol Boonson has set his sights on more records after completing a sprint double at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with another record-breaking performance.
The 20-year-old won the men’s 200-metre final in Nagoya on September 27 in 19.88 seconds, tying the Asian record and breaking the Asian Games record of 20.10 seconds that he had set in the preliminary round.
The victory came two days after Boonson won the 100-metre final in an Asian Games record time of 9.90 seconds.
Boonson finished more than half a second ahead of China’s Huang Youwen, who took silver in 20.45 seconds. Japan’s Soshi Mizukubo finished third in 20.56 seconds.
Despite the pressure surrounding his second final, Boonson said his approach to the 200 metres remained similar to his preparation for the 100 metres. He said the atmosphere brought additional adrenaline and motivation to win another gold medal.
The young sprinter has now indicated that he wants to continue improving rather than simply build on his latest victories. Following the race, he said he was targeting more gold medals and records, although he did not specify a particular time.
His performances in Nagoya have established him as one of the leading young sprinters in Asian athletics. The 200-metre result also placed him alongside the continent’s fastest athletes after he matched the Asian record in the event.
