UAE President Strengthens Climate Pledge on World Environment Day

UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development on World Environment Day. In a message posted on the social media site X, Sheikh Mohamed emphasised the necessity of collaborating with the international community to advance meaningful climate actions. He emphasised the UAE’s continuous efforts to create a healthier, more resilient world for future generations.

This year’s World Environment Day theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution,” bringing urgent attention to the global plastic waste crisis.

The UAE has been at the forefront of addressing this issue, aggressively encouraging collaborative global efforts to reduce plastic pollution. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has launched a thorough plan to monitor plastic waste levels in marine and coastal areas.

Scientific studies are being conducted to understand the impact of plastic waste, and findings are being used to implement targeted solutions. The UAE government has also proposed legislation to prohibit single-use plastic products. A nationwide ban on single-use plastic bags went into effect in 2024, with an expanded ban on other single-use items scheduled for 2026.

The UAE is still committed to implementing sustainable policies that balance environmental protection and economic growth.
