Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage created history by winning the men’s javelin throw gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, becoming the country’s first-ever athletics gold medallist at the Games.
The 23-year-old outshone a world-class field that included Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra of India and defending Commonwealth and Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan.
Competing in difficult, windy conditions at Scotstoun Stadium, Pathirage produced a superb throw of 89.75 metres, which proved enough to secure the gold medal. Remarkably, it was his only valid throw across his first five attempts.
Nadeem endured a disappointing outing, failing to produce a competitive mark in his opening three throws and exiting the competition before the final three rounds.
India’s Neeraj Chopra claimed the silver medal with a season-best throw of 85.83m, with compatriot Yash Vir Singh earning bronze with a personal-best 85.41m, completing a double podium finish for India.
Former world champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago finished sixth with a best throw of 82.55m, despite entering the competition as one of the favourites.
Before taking up javelin, Pathirage was a promising fast bowler in cricket, reportedly clocking 134 km/h as a teenager before switching sports. His transition has now culminated in one of the biggest achievements in Sri Lankan athletics history.
