Danish shuttler claims women’s singles title in straight games in Finland
Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt defeated Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon 21-17, 21-13 to win the women’s singles title at the Arctic Open in Vantaa, Finland, on October 11.
Blichfeldt, ranked 15th in the world, overcame the fifth-ranked Intanon at the BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament. The victory marked a significant result for the Danish shuttler against an opponent ranked ten places above her.
Blichfeldt secured her place in the final by defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the semi-finals. She had earlier beaten China’s Han Yue 21-18, 24-22 in the quarter-finals, navigating a closely fought second game to advance.
Intanon also faced strong opposition on her way to the final. The Thai player defeated Denmark’s Line Christophersen in the semi-finals after overcoming India’s P. V. Sindhu 21-11, 19-21, 21-18 in the quarter-finals. Her win over Sindhu came in three games, with Intanon recovering after losing the second.
In the final, Blichfeldt took the opening game 21-17 before producing a more decisive performance in the second. She maintained control of the rallies and limited Intanon’s opportunities to recover, sealing the title with a 21-13 win.
The Arctic Open ran from October 6 to 11 and featured five disciplines: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The tournament forms part of the BWF World Tour, which brings leading international players together across a season of competitions.
