Abhishek Sharma Breaks Suryakumar’s T20I World Record

Sharma reached the milestone in 1,024 deliveries, surpassing the previous record held by Suryakumar Yadav, who had required 1,164 balls. The achievement came during an aggressive innings at the Holkar Stadium, where Sharma continued his reputation as one of India’s most attacking batters in the shortest international format.

Abhishek Sharma set a new record for the fewest balls needed to score 2,000 runs in T20 Internationals. He achieved the feat against the West Indies in Indore on October 11.

The left-hander scored 69 runs off 30 deliveries, striking six fours and five sixes. He reached his half-century in just 18 balls, putting pressure on the West Indies bowling attack early in the innings. His quick scoring helped India recover after the early dismissal of Sanju Samson and maintain a strong run rate during the powerplay.

Sharma’s innings provided India with a solid platform to build a competitive total. The hosts eventually posted 223 runs before restricting the West Indies to 209 for seven, securing a 14-run victory in the third match.

The West Indies remained within reach of the target but could not sustain the scoring rate required to complete the chase. India’s bowlers held their nerve in the closing overs to protect the total.

The record is measured by the number of deliveries required to reach 2,000 runs, rather than the number of innings played. Sharma’s achievement places him ahead of Suryakumar on this measure and underlines the impact of his aggressive approach at the top of India’s batting order.
