Sandeep Sets 400m World Record as India Reaches 100 Medals at Asian Para Games

Indian para-athlete Sandeep set a world record in the men’s 400 metres to win gold at the 2026 Asian Para Games on Friday, helping India cross the 100-medal mark at the competition in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

Sandeep clocked 52.28 seconds in the 400m event, setting a new T44 world record while competing in a race involving athletes from different lower-limb impairment classifications. Saudi Arabia’s Nour Alsana took silver in 53.13 seconds, while India’s Ajay Kumar won bronze in 53.61 seconds.

Ajay Kumar’s bronze time also set a Games record. The two Indian medals took the country’s overall tally to 100 at the time the milestone was reported, marking the second consecutive Asian Para Games edition in which India had reached the century mark.

India’s medal haul has been built across athletics, para-archery, badminton, swimming and other disciplines. The latest results added to a campaign in which Indian athletes have won medals in both individual and team events.

Sandeep’s record-breaking performance was among the day’s leading results. India also secured gold through Haney in the men’s F37/38 javelin throw, where he recorded a world-record distance of 60.49 metres.

India finished the previous edition in Hangzhou in 2023 with 111 medals. Reaching 100 in the 2026 competition puts the team within reach of that total, with events still remaining.

The results underline India’s strong showing at the Games, while the remaining competitions offer further opportunities to add to the medal count.
