Indore, known as India’s cleanest city, has added another feather to its cap by setting a new Guinness World Record for the most trees planted by a group in 24 hours. Indore planted more than 1.1 million trees between July 13 and 14, 2024, as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative. This initiative surpasses the previous record of 921,730 set in September 2023 by Assam’s Forest Department.
The programme, which aims to honour mothers and Mother Earth by planting trees, received significant support. The Union Home Minister joined the campaign by planting a sapling in the BSF Academy’s Revati Range, where the plantation drive included nine zones and 100 sub-zones.
More than 2,000 BSF jawans, over 100 NRIs, NCC cadets from 50 schools, and a large number of individuals and social organisations all participated in this tremendous endeavour.
The plantation included a wide variety of trees, from long-lived species like Banyan and Neem to medicinal plants like Guava and Amla. Experts predict that Indore’s record-breaking success will inspire similar large-scale environmental projects across the country, helping India realise its ambitious goals of increasing forest cover and combating climate change.

On July 6, Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, marked its 26th anniversary, a momentous day in the history and development of the nation. Astana, which combined Asian and European influences to be named a UNESCO City of Peace in 1999, has grown to be an important Eurasian metropolis.
The International Specialised Exhibition EXPO 2017 has contributed to the city’s continued prosperity as a key diplomatic hub and popular tourist destination. Astana’s dynamic skyline is a reflection of its ongoing change and dedication to sustainable growth.
With daily flights and a 14-day visa-free period, the city draws large numbers of visitors and offers a distinctive blend of European and Asian architecture and culture. Its appeal was further enhanced when it was designated as a free economic zone in 1999, which sparked rapid economic expansion.
Celebrating Astana’s dynamic development and growing worldwide status, Capital City Day was declared a national holiday in 2008. The city encourages international communication while advancing efforts for sustainable development, trade, security, and collaboration. EXPO 2017 considerably increased tourism and the economy, securing Astana’s place in the world economy.
Astana’s skyline is constantly changing, with new tall buildings, wide squares, and parks.
The room opening onto Buckingham Palace’s iconic balcony, where the royal family waves to the public during major events, is now open for public tours after a renovation. The “East Wing Highlights” tours were sold out in a single day. In addition to the $50 ordinary Buckingham Palace tour ticket, standard adult tickets are roughly $90.
Visitors will witness the Centre Room, which leads to the well-known balcony that is home to historical artefacts such as silk wall hangings from the 18th century that were sent to Queen Victoria as a Diamond Jubilee gift from Emperor Guangxu of China in 1897.
According to Nicola Turner Inman, the Royal Collection Trust’s curator of ornamental arts, Prince Albert proposed the balcony as a way for royals to interact with the public. When troops were sent off for the Crimean War, it was first used in 1851.
A tour through the Principal Corridor, which leads to the Centre Room and features well-known artworks, is part of the trip. The Yellow Drawing Room’s freshly repaired Chinese hand-painted wallpaper from the 18th century is another attraction for guests.
“We aim to make the collection more accessible, fulfilling the wish of His Majesty the King to open up the royal residences,” Inman stated.
President Vladimir Putin presented Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, the highest civilian award in Russia, in appreciation of his outstanding efforts to strengthen the strategic alliance between Russia and India.
PM Modi thanked Putin during the event and emphasised the value of the unique and privileged strategic alliance between the two countries while dedicating the distinction to the Indian people.
Tsar Peter the Great founded the Order of St. Andrew in 1698, and it is considered the pinnacle of chivalry. Russia has a rich historical and cultural heritage. On its badge, a double-headed eagle and the words “For Faith and Loyalty” are written alongside a golden cross with blue enamel that depicts Saint Andrew the Apostle being crucified.
Recipients of the order are eminent figures in various fields who have made outstanding contributions to the security, prosperity, and sovereignty of Russia.
The order for exceptional service to Russia may also be given to heads of state from other countries. After the award, the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia displays the recipient’s portrait, commissioned by the Russian president’s office as a tribute to their accomplishments.
On July 8, SpaceX launched Turkey’s first domestically produced communications satellite, Turksat 6A, into orbit. At 7:15 p.m. EDT (2330 GMT), a Falcon 9 rocket took off from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
The rocket’s first stage came back to Earth on SpaceX’s Just Read the Instructions drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean about 8.5 minutes after takeoff. This was the 15th time that this rocket successfully took off and landed.
The top stage of the rocket kept sending Turksat 6A into geosynchronous transfer orbit, where it was successfully deployed 35.5 minutes after launch. According to the Hürriyet Daily News, Turkey’s transport and infrastructure minister, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, said that the satellite will now find its final path and go through about a month of checks before it can be used.
Turksat 6A is Turkey’s first fully homegrown communications satellite. Its goal is to increase the country’s satellite reach and meet its TV broadcasting needs. Uraloğlu highlighted in his speech that Turksat 6A would extend coverage to previously unserved regions, including India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, reaching a population of 5 billion people.
On August 23, ISRO will host the Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon in observance of the first-ever National Space Day. This event commemorates Vikram Lander’s successful landing close to the southern polar zone of the moon. In the wake of the Vikram landing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced August 23 to be National Space Day.
The hackathon, announced on July 4 by ISRO Chairman S Somanath, features 12 problem statements in the geospatial domain, space science, image processing, and AI/ML.
It encourages groups of three to four students to submit creative solutions and is available to undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students nationwide. A jury of experts will first choose 100 teams based only on their ideation, and 30 of those teams will move on to the 30-hour Grand Finale on August 13 and 14 at NRSC, Hyderabad.
Somanath stressed the hackathon’s contribution to the development of application-driven ecosystems and the advancement of space-based technology innovation for the good of society and the country. He emphasised the possibility that concepts developed during the hackathon could develop into workable business plans.
As part of the celebrations for the first National Space Day, the event will also include public engagements and outreach initiatives across India.
A team of European carbon removal specialists has launched an initiative to help Indian businesses develop projects that extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) initiatives around Europe have raised more than 220 million euros ($238 million) in donations from the Amsterdam-based organisation “Remove.”
Now that the organisation is accepting applications, Indian start-ups will have access to Remove’s network of professionals and foreign buyers and possible future funding.
Reforestation and air filters that remove carbon straight from the atmosphere are examples of CDR initiatives.
It is anticipated that Indian efforts will concentrate on “enhanced weathering,” which involves spreading rocks like basalt across the land to absorb CO2 and biochar, charcoal made from burning organic matter.
The amount of CO2 that must be removed annually to keep temperature increases below the crucial 1.5-degree Celsius barrier has increased from two billion to seven to nine billion metric tonnes. If growth restrictions are removed, the CDR market might reach a valuation of approximately $100 billion by 2030, up from $2.27 billion in 2023.
The U.S. federal government, Microsoft, and Google are among the very few altruistic customers with limited demand for CDR credits.
New visa regulations implemented by Kuwait enable foreign nationals employed in the public sector to transfer their visas to positions in the private sector. The announcement was made by Sheikh Fahad Al Yousuf Al Sabah, Minister of Defence and Interior and Office of the First Deputy Prime Minister. Its goal is to expedite the transfer procedure while adhering to the laws governing labour mobility.
Starting July 14, domestic workers can transfer to the private sector if they meet specific conditions: obtaining approval from their current employer, having a minimum residency of one year with the employer, and paying a transfer fee of 50 dinars (about Dh600). There will be an extra fee of 10 dinars for every year that the employee has worked for the present employer.
A three-month amnesty period that permitted foreigners living there illegally to change their status by paying fines, applying for new residency, or leaving the nation without being penalised has ended in Kuwait.
The government has recently imposed strict regulations on illegal housing following a devastating building fire that resulted in the deaths of fifty people. In the most recent raid, several foreigners were forced from their houses in Kuwait.
