Germany has pledged nearly EUR 1.3 billion to India to promote climate action, clean energy expansion, and sustainable development efforts. The investment, which was announced during the India-Germany Government Negotiations on Development Cooperation 2025, will largely be provided as concessional loans. The funding will be directed towards climate and energy projects, sustainable urban development, green urban mobility, and responsible natural resource management.
The two countries reaffirmed their long-term partnership under the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership, which guides bilateral efforts to achieve climate-resilient growth. Germany also intends to strengthen collaboration in skills development, with a particular emphasis on renewable energy training and workforce capacity building.
German officials highlighted India’s importance as a strategic partner for the new German government. The cooperation strives to foster long-term prosperity while addressing shared global challenges. Germany’s envoy to India described the relationship as unique in scope and ambition, emphasising that it reflects equal cooperation rather than typical development aid.
The collaboration includes key initiatives like the Indo-German Green Urban Mobility Partnership. Recent examples include funding for Bengaluru’s Yellow Line Metro and climate-focused innovation projects, which promote low-carbon growth, job creation, and cleaner urban transportation in Indian cities.
