India has secured a strong global standing by ranking 16th among 154 countries in the first-ever Responsible Nations Index (RNI), a new international benchmark designed to assess how responsibly nations exercise their power towards their citizens, the environment, and the global community. The index framework was launched in New Delhi by the Delhi-based World Intellectual Foundation (WIF) and draws on widely recognised international data sources, including the World Bank, the United Nations, and the World Justice Project.
The RNI evaluates countries across three key dimensions: internal responsibility, environmental responsibility, and international behavior, offering a holistic view of national conduct beyond economic or military strength. Singapore topped the rankings, followed by Switzerland and Denmark, with India emerging as one of the highest-ranked developing economies.
The index highlights that economic power does not automatically translate into responsible governance. Several developing nations outperformed wealthier countries in areas such as social justice, environmental protection, and peacebuilding. China ranked 68th, while the United States placed 66th, reinforcing the idea that national responsibility is not solely linked to financial or strategic influence.
For India, the ranking reflects notable progress in healthcare, social equity, environmental policiess and people-centric governance. At the same time, the RNI also underscores areas requiring continued focus, pointing to the need for sustained reforms to ensure inclusive, balanced ,and sustainable long-term growth.
